Step Dimming

Noun

Definition of Step Dimming

Step dimming is a lighting control system that allows you to adjust the brightness of your lights by choosing between preset intensity levels.

Step-dimming lights can be controlled with existing switches regardless of their position, whether they’re mounted on the floor, wall, or ceiling. This eliminates the use of a dimmer or a control module that enables you to dim your lights.

By pressing the switch on and off several times, the light source is altered to your desired level. For example, the light output of an LED light fixture can be set to four different levels: 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25%.

When the light is switched on and off again within three seconds, the lighting automatically switches to the next dim level.

When the light remains switched off for more than three seconds, 100% brightness is automatically available, ready for the next time you use the lights.

Step dimming provides the following advantages:

  • Cost-effective: Step-dimming lights are controlled with the existing light switches, eliminating the need for any extra tools such as dimmers or control modules.
  • Ease of use: It doesn’t involve complex programming or controls. You can adjust the brightness level with just a switch.
  • Consistent lighting levels: The preset light levels of your fixture are precisely calibrated and don’t change over time. You’re assured of consistent lighting anytime you adjust the brightness.
  • Ease of installation: Compared to other dimmable lights that might require a connection to a control module, step-dimming lights require no extra wiring.

This type of dimming is ideal for marine lighting; you can adjust the light level for specific purposes such as navigation or accent lighting.
